Diagnosis for the need for single-vision or multi-focal lenses is made through a comprehensive eye examination.
Single-Vision Lenses
Single-vision lenses are prescribed to correct one field of vision either distant, near, or intermediate. Single-vision lenses are generally dispensed in CR-39 plastic.
High-Index Lenses
With a higher refraction index, high-index lenses offer better vision if you have been prescribed strong single-vision or multi-focal lenses. Having thinner edges and a lighter overall weight, they are more comfortable and look more attractive.
Bifocals
The upper part of a bi-focal lens helps with distance vision correction. The lower part helps correct near vision.
The half-moon-shaped segment line divides the two parts.
Trifocals
Tri-focal lenses are quite similar to bi-focal lenses. The difference between the two is that in tri-focal lenses, there is a third part in the middle that offers intermediate focus correction to view objects at an arm's distance. The three parts are divided by 2 segment lines.
Progressive Lenses
Progressive lenses enable an easy changeover from distance to near vision correction. Also called invisible multi-focal lenses, these lenses do not require segment lines to ensure clearer near, intermediate, and far vision. Presbyopia, or short-armed syndrome, is the condition in which the eye loses its capacity to alter focus to view objects that are close by. It is generally experienced around the age of 40 and develops with age as the lens in the eye becomes less flexible. Progressive lenses are designed to correct presbyopia and are also compatible with small frames and other styles.
